The significance of science to the mankind has been effectively summarized by the Dr. APJ Abul Kalam, i.e., "Science, more Science and still more Science is needed to lay the strong foundations for the development and growth of an individual, a society, a nation and the world". Further, to quote Pt Nehru, "it is science alone that can solve the problems of hunger and poverty, of in-sanitation and illiteracy, of superstitions, dreading customs and traditions, of vast resources running into waste, of a rich country inhabited by starving people… ".

Basic sciences are devoted to creating knowledge - more knowledge and still more knowledge about the constituents of the Universe and beyond. Explosion of knowledge and accumulation of extensive and yet authentic database in the fields of mathematical, physical, bio, geo and the like basic sciences paved way to the birth of life, environmental, food and other popular branches of applied sciences. However, the basic sciences are, and would ever remain the backbone of all the scientific and technological developments. Today, we need to know more about materials, energy, land, air and water. It is beyond doubts that the systematic efforts for the development of basic sciences can ensure the effective development, protection and enhancement of human life on earth. Scientists need to produce more comprehensive information, under-standing and technologies for society to move towards sustainable biosphere - one, which is ecologically sound, economically feasible and socially just. Whether it is chemical or biological warfare, PAS proteins, environmental issues, medicinal herbs or redesigning of processes and products for an energy efficient and environment friendly society, the basic scientific research is essential to unearth the secrets of men and materials. Thus, the Institute of Basic Sciences is devoted to impart state of the art theoretical and practical knowledge to the students leading to the following degrees:
